You're missing the entire point of modern roster management. The December signing day is absolutely critical because it sets your foundation. You can't just ignore high school recruiting and expect to build anything lasting. Those top ten classes on 247Sports matter because they bring in the elite talent you develop for three or four years. What you're calling "panic" is just other programs being aggressive in addressing immediate needs, something your staff seems allergic to. While you're waiting for your projects to develop, teams are loading up with proven players from the portal who can win games right now. You talk about culture, but culture doesn't win games by itself. You need dudes. And "finding fits for the locker room" sounds like an excuse for not being able to compete for the top-tier portal talent. everybody is looking for spceific needs. The difference is some of us are actually filling them with impact players, not just hoping a three-star develops. Your "secret sauce" of development is what every program claims. The reality is, if you were developing players so well, you wouldn't have so many holes to fill with projects. The teams mastering the portal are adding finished products to their high school foundations. You're just building the foundation and calling it a day. That's not a strategy for championships. That's a strategy for being perpetually behind.
