That ESPN piece asking if the portal killed QB competitions hits the nail on the head and it makes me sick. Back in the 90s under Coach Stallings you had guys like Jay Barker and Brian Burgdorf battling it out in fall camp for months, earning every rep, and the best man won because he earned the trust of the whole locker room. Now you throw a bag at some kid from the portal and he is the starter before he even steps on campus, no competition, no loyalty, no nothing. We are doing it ourselves with this portal-heavy line and I get that you have to adapt but it feels hollow. Remember when a quarterback sat for three years and learned the system before taking a snap? That is dead and gone and the game is worse for it.
