Just saw that thread about the Georgia fan trying to claim their fan culture is "authentic" because they sell out. Please. Our side of the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry has been packing Jordan-Hare for generations without needing a ring to show up. You think Georgia fans would still fill that place if they went 3-9? We did it under Gene Chizik's last year and we did it under Harsin too. That is what real fan culture looks like. Not the frontrunning stuff you see between Athens and Tuscaloosa. I remember sitting in the student section during some truly forgettable seasons and that place was still shaking. That is not something you can buy with a new indoor facility or a bigger video board. That is passed down. You go to any tailgate on a Saturday in October and you will see three generations of families who have. The Toomer's Corner rolling tradition did not start because of a winning streak. It started because people love this place even when it hurts. National media loves to talk about SEC atmosphere but they always go to Death Valley or The Swamp when we. We lost to UCF at home in 2019 and the student section was still screaming in the fourth quarter. That is who we are. We do not need a preseason ranking to validate our culture. We just need a Saturday and some lemonade.

Just saw ESPN rank the top defensive players for 2026 and I have to say something about the state of defensive coaching in this sport because it ties right into what I have been watching for forty years. We are sitting here in June with no games to watch and I am thinking about the difference between Coach Erk Russell and what passes for position coaching these days. Erk had those 1980 Junkyard Dawgs playing with a kind of fury you just do not see anymore. Belue to Scott gets all the glory but that defense held three ranked teams to single digits down the stretch and they did it with walk-ons and guys who worked summers in the mill. There is a reason they called him the Junkyard Dawg. He could take a kid who nobody wanted and make him believe he was the baddest man on the field. Nowadays you get a transfer from the portal who has been at three schools and the linebacker coach has to teach him the system in four weeks of spring ball. How do you build that kind of bond when you know the kid is gone the second somebody offers him a better NIL package? Coach Dooley used to say defense wins championships and he was right but defense also requires continuity and loyalty and trust. You cannot build those things in a dead period workout session with a roster full of mercenaries. I watch these ESPN lists and I see all these names from Texas and Oregon and Ohio State and I wonder how many of them will still be at the same program in two years. Back in 1984 when we held Clemson to three points in that 26-3 win at Sanford Stadium we had guys who had been playing together since they were freshmen. They knew each other's tendencies. They did not need to check the sideline for a signal on every single play. The game has gotten faster and the athletes are bigger and stronger than anything we saw in the 80s or 90s. But I would take a Coach Russell defense over any modern scheme because he understood something that these analytics guys will never grasp. Football is about want-to. You cannot buy that in the portal.

I have been thinking about on this quiet June evening with nothing else to do? The old Florida game. Not this Texas nonsense they are feeding us now. I was sittng here reading the ESPN SEC preview and they are talking about how the league is stacked and I just kept thinking about the 1997 game against Florida in Jacksonville. We went down there with a defense that hit you in the mouth and Bobo was slinging it around and we had that chance. That game meant something because it was the Cocktail Party. It was Florida. It was Spurrier on the other sideline with that visor and that smirk. We lost that one 32-14 if I remember right and I sat in that parking lot for two hours after just staring at the tailgate thinking about what could have been. That is what I miss. The buildup. The hate. Knowing you had one Saturday a year to settle the score with the Gators and if you lost you had to hear about it for twelve months straight. Now we are playing Texas and Oklahoma and who knows who else. I do not hate Texas. I do not care about Texas. There is no history there. No blood. You cannot manufacture a rivalry like Florida-Georgia in a boardroom meeting with TV executives. That game was built on decades of brawls and broken hearts and Herschel running over people and Belue to Scott sending us to the 1980 national championship. You cannot buy that with a conference check. The SEC preview says we are contenders again and maybe we are but the schedule does not hit the same. We play Texas in October and I am supposed to get worked up about a program we have played like ten times in history? They are fine. They are good. But they are not Florida. They are not the team I grew up wanting to beat more than any other program on earth. The portal has made it worse. Kids bounce around so much now that by the time you learn to hate a player he is already at another school. Back in the 80s you knew every name on that Florida roster because they stayed four years. You knew Emmitt Smith. You knew Shane Matthews. You knew those defensive ends that gave us fits. You built a relationship with the hate. Now I look at our schedule and I see Texas and Oklahoma and Missouri and I just shrug. Where is the fire? Where is the week where the whole state of Georgia stops breathing because Florida week has arrived? I will never get that back and that is what stings the most about all this realignment nonsense. They took our game and made it just another Saturday.

Just saw ESPN drop their 2026 SEC preview and I am trying to figure out where the disrespect ends and the reality begins. Three years without an SEC team winning a national title and suddenly the narrative flips from "the SEC is unbeatable". One of those years Alabama was literally one play away from the semifinals and Georgia has been in the mix every single season. But I am not here to defend the rest of the conference. I am here to talk about us. The preview mentions plenty of contenders but I noticed we are still being treated like we are two years away from being two years away. Meanwhile we have been quietly stacking talent in our RB room that would make most of the SEC jealous. Our recruiting has been steady if not spectacular. The 2027 class rankings that ESPN just put out show we are in the mix nationally even if we are. And you know what? That is fine. We have always been the program that develops players better than we recruit them. Give me a coaching staff that can evaluate and develop over a staff that just chases five-star ratings any day of the week. The part of the prreview that actually got me thinking is the discussion about parity in the SEC. People are acting like the conference fell off but what actually happened is the middle got better. Vanderbilt gave people fits. Arkansas is no longer a guaranteed win. Mississippi State has fight in them. That is not a decline. That is the conference getting deeper. And in a deeper conference, the teams that can run the football and stop the run are the ones who survive. That is literally our identity when we are at our best. I look at our schedule and I see the Baylor game at home on a Wednesday evening and I already. That midweek night game atmosphere is going to rattle a Baylor team coming across the country. We have the backfield to control the clock. We have the defensive front to make their QB uncomfortable. And we have the home field advantage that nobody in the country can replicate.
